Dreaming Awake A Falling Under Novel Gwen Hayes Books

Just like Falling Under, Dreaming Awake is amazing, Gothic, romantic and suspenseful. Hayes build an eerie but beautiful world that repulses as well as it captivates.

It has only been a short time since Theia came back from the Under and Mara is at it again and she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Threats arise and the gang seem to be a little bit in shambles. Haden and Theia are keeping secrets from not only their friends but from each other as well.

The love between Theia and Haden is so powerful, magical and magnetic, it's the kind of love everyone wishes for but few ever get it. Everything is a total mess and they have to go through a lot in Dreaming Awake. However through it all they make it back to each other and I think a love like that is why this series is so captivating.

I am not going to lie, during some parts of this book I was like are you kidding me. I was frustrated and near the end of the book I was crushed; something happened that I did not see coming so I was more than a little upset. However Gwen did make it up for me by having a lovely ending.

I love this series so much and even though it does feel complete with the two books, I really wished I got at least one more book with Theia and Haden. I am telling you read this series, it is most definitely part of my favorite book collection.

Dreaming Awake A Falling Under Novel Gwen Hayes Books Reviews

Wow! It was so good to be back in Haden & Theia's world! (Even if part of it is the Underworld) I really missed them & all their loyal & eccentric friends! Things have gotten even stranger & more dangerous for them now that they have both returned to Serendipity Falls. They may have gotten out but they won't get away so easy. Some of their greatest fears are now chasing them down. Plus Theia is finally getting a better understanding of why it's so hard for Haden to control his darker side because now she is suffering through the same problem. I spent a lot of time wondering how on earth (or in hell) they could manage to get through all of this! There were several shocking discoveries & some heartbreaking moments but it all added up to a fascinating sequel!
Warning This entire review is a spoiler....

I am so glad that this story acknowledges that it's ok not to be squeaky clean and purest white. Theia accepts her darkness and the fact that she must embrace it in order to be with the man she loves. Why do authors think readers always want the characters to be angels (literally and figuratively)? Why do the heroines want to make their love interests of questionable backgrounds resist their natures and try to be 'normal'?

Maybe it's because I'm on the older side of the 'young adult' age bracket, but I am so over the constrictive good guys/bad guys roles. The reality is that everything falls in between and there are rarely fairy tale endings. I think the shades of gray are what make a good story interesting, and that an ending can be happy without being sugary sweet. Love a story where you have a hard time discerning exactly who the 'good' guys even are and where not everyone goes to heaven in the end. Gwen Hayes' Falling Under and Dreaming Awake are great because the characters aren't perfect and the story doesn't follow the usual YA paranormal romance formula. I love that the villain (Mara) was actually doing the main characters a favor if only they'd stopped to think about it with a more open mind. Maybe they would've wanted to do it a little differently, but they actually all wanted similar things in the end.
Falling Under was the story of Theia and Haden falling together and making choices they never thought they'd have to make. Dreaming Awake deals with the aftermath of those decisions and how it affects all the relationships in the novel.

Theia now has demon blood in her and she's trying to continue as if she was completely human. She manages to escape from Mara and Under, but that doesn't mean Mara won't go after her. As Theia starts to shut people out to protect them, things keep getting worse and worse.

Once again, the relationship between Theia and Haden had me smiling. I may have been a little put off by the insta-love in Falling Under, but in Dreaming Awake there's enough of a relationship there to make it wonderful to read. The only aspect I didn't enjoy was Theia's insistence on breaking up with Haden to protect him. I'm getting a little tired of Young Adult novels using this as a way to separate characters, instead of having them work on the relationship and its problems together.

Theia's best friends, Donny and Amelia, are still fantastic people in this novel. They don't let Theia ignore them or push them away. They tackle problems as a group, making sure they use their individual strengths to cover each other's weaknesses. They're some of the best written friends I've read in Young Adult fiction lately.

Varnie takes on an even more important role in Dreaming Awake and I loved him so much it hurt at times. Gabe is also a little more prevalent in this novel and I enjoyed reading about his and Donny's relationship and their struggles to be together yet not lose who they were and what they stood for.

Dreaming Awake is a fantastic novel that really delves into the consequences of the characters' actions in Falling Under. It makes the characters grow up and deal with the future they have written, while still maintaining a sweet, touching quality. Falling Under and Dreaming Awake are a wonderful pair of books that anyone who likes a touch of the supernatural mixed into the romance needs to read.
