Knowing that the previous books have Edie fighting evil while being a nurse, I was afraid that this book, being set on a boat during vacation, would be a lame, mid-series filler story. I WAS WRONG.....how I determine that I enjoyed a book...
YES: Am I glad that I PAID for the book?
YES: Was there good and realistic CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?
YES: Was the PLOT logical and/or interesting?
NO: Would I buy the AUDIOBOOK or REREAD the story because I enjoyed it so much?
The series needed a break from the old nurse routine and does so by progressing Edie and Asher's relationship while also giving us a deeper look into Asher's dark past (the story is really more about Asher). The conflict on the boat had me constantly guessing as to how everything would shake out and then.....
THE ENTIRE EDIE SPENCE UNIVERSE TURNS UPSIDE DOWN!
I noticed some people giving this book less than a favorable rating, but I don't understand why. If you like a book that should be predictable but isn't, and has twists and turns with interesting characters...
THEN THIS IS A BOOK TO READ.

This engrossing page turner combines the medical world in Michael Crichton's books with the urban fantasy world. This book takes us on a vacation cruise from hell, only instead of a virus making the crew and passengers sick, an evil, mad scientist is contaminating everyone to bring about a paranormal catastrophe. Edie is left to save the day. The ending is ripe for the next book.
This book arrived in the middle of a 5-day stretch being home from work sick. Perfect. I've enjoyed the series quite a bit, and since I'm an RN myself, it is a relief to read medical stuff done right! The writing is succinct and engaging, the plot clear without being predictable, and I now have two new favorite secondary characters.
As far as it being darker than the previous books, um, we're talking books about vampires, zombies, shape-changers, werewolves, etc. Generally, that doesn't work out well. ;) And here, it really, really doesn't. Now that Edie's out of the frying pan, I look forward to seeing how she gets out of the fire.
What a Climatic conclusion to a already good story line.
Would have liked a condensed review of Asher & Edie's developing relationship, in the beginning of the story instead of the middle to end of said story.
Perhaps the author plan to drop the reader into the middle of the situation to see if the reader could survive, also?
All this reader can say is, "Enjoy the ride."
I am normally a fan of the Edie books, but this was like the Titanic meets Zombieland. I just could not enjoy it. Edie was selfish and lacking any sort of humanity. Asher was completely devoid of any type of development at all. The engagement scene was rushed and unconvincing, secondary characters were either stereotypes or completely unconvincing (the thought, the elderly Kathy Bates, the gay entertainer). This one is one I won't be re-reading and may have convinced me to not keep up with the series.
I've been displeased with an authors' decision about a story line before, but never this bad. Also, the balance is usually restored and I feel better about the characters. There are too many horrible things in this world, I want my entertainment to have something uplifting about it. I wish I had not read this book without the next one being available already. Maybe the next book will be better.
This book in the series feels like a transition book, it's part 1 of 2 but that doesn't stop me from loving it just the same.
The setting and events in the book exactly depict why I will always talk myself out of going on a cruise ship, not because of the supernatural nature of what happens but because of the realistic nature of how a virus can spread within a contained environment.
The author's medical background continues to make this series one of the most realistic series I've read and the way she's able to pull on her background to give life to well death is impressive.
Deadshifted opens the door to a more complex life for Edie and I'm trilled to find out what path that door opened on.
When Edie and Asher embark on what is supposed to be a relaxing cruise to Hawaii, there is little chance that the trouble that usually follows Edie will take a vacation and leave them in peace. When Asher realizes there is a man on board that he used to know in his disreputable past, he is intent on making sure that he puts a stop to whatever mischief the shady man might be up to. Of course there are complications, including Edie’s impending motherhood, when sickness begins sweeping through the ship and all hell breaks loose on board. It’s up to Edie as usual, to figure out what’s going on and she uses whatever means at her disposal to put a stop to the mayhem and save herself and Asher. The conclusion was a bit unexpected, but really, I’ve learned to expect unusual endings to these fantastic adventures and I’m always left eager to see what Edie will be up to next.
Knowing that the previous books have Edie fighting evil while being a nurse, I was afraid that this book, being set on a boat during vacation, would be a lame, mid-series filler story. I WAS WRONG.
