We have several books on southern Italy and Calabria specifically since my wife has numerous relatives there. This is without a doubt, the single best book we have read on the subject. The author spent some years teaching English there, first in Locri, then in Reggio. During her stay there, she visited a variety of villages and cities throughout the region. We have been there a few times and she vividly brought back memories. We feel that the mere fact that she is a non-Italian worked to her advantage in writing this book. Others we have read by people from the region or with ancestors from there write with something of an agenda, whereas her approach is more pragmatic. Her love of the culture is not only deep, but her observations are detailed in ways that might very well escape a person who is in any way native to the area. Should anyone be in a position to visit Calabria, or is even just thinking about going to Italy and wondering what part they would like to visit that is off the touristy path, this is definitely a book to read. In fact, read it anyway, It's beautifully written and very descriptive of a deeply historic area of Italy, with its ancient Greek roots (Pythagoris lived there) Few who visit Italy as tourists, and perhaps even few Italian-Americans with roots there, are fully aware of its cultural depth.

Calabria The Other Italy Karen Haid 9781634132305 Books Reviews

I was planning a trip to my father's town in Italia in southern Calabria and wanted to read up on the area. I found this wonderful book by Karen Haid which provided so much insight on my anticipated travels to Calabria. She shared her personal account of living and working in Calabria and this provided great insight on places to visit,. There are some travel books about Calabria but this book offered so much more. She writes with great insight and humor. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to those considering a visit to Calabria, Italy or desiring to learn more about this wonderful part of Italy!
I think I liked this book a lot because my family is from Calabria and there are few good books about Calabria. The book was great because it put some context to some of the customs and superstitions I grew up with in America. It is also a great book to use to plan a trip to Calabria.
This book will have you packing your bags for a tour of the southern part of Calabria. Karen Haid has written a telling book about her experiences as an English teacher in the deepest part of Italy. The book is a character study of the Calabrians. They are the same as other Italians and they are different. The influence of the Greeks and the Byzantine cultures show up in her observations. Many localities are described. The temptation is to go and see many of them. Life should be long enough and pockets should be deep enough. My sense is that this would not be like visiting Tuscany. Go now.
What a great way to start off a month-long excursion to Puglia and Calabria. Sure, I could have picked up a traditional guide book to augment the myraid pieces of info I found scattered across the web, but I wanted more. I got what I was looking for when this book arrived and I promptly devoured it. And that was just the first time I read it. After getting an excellent initial feel for the region I have since gone back to the book over and over again to re-engage and immerse myself in what it has to offer. I can't wait to be there to personally soak in the region which I now know just that much better.
I order many items from , but rarely write reviews. However, I felt compelled to write a review of this engaging, entertaining and informative book. Novels are more typically my go-to read, but my book club decided to try something different. I didn’t know what to expect, but I have thoroughly enjoyed my excursion into Calabria, Italy. The author offers a unique presentation of her firsthand personal experiences, interesting and enlightening historical background, rich descriptions of day to day life effusive with local color, and captivating descriptions of the landscape and significant sites to see, all seamlessly woven into a completely engaging and singular experience. The author’s pleasantly wry and dry sense of humor is evident throughout, as she provides her own commentary on the human condition as experienced through this particular culture. I highly recommend this fun, funny, interesting, stimulating, educational and thought-provoking book. You will not have read anything like it!
The punch line is that I highly recommend this book.

I bought the book because of a scheduled trip to Calabria. The guide books that I found were skeletal. I got facts, but not much “feel”. There were no New York Times articles romanticizing the area. I need some color and tips. I need directions for “experiencing” this section of Italy.

Ms. Haid nailed it. She presents life in Calabria in real-life terms. Sometimes her descriptions were as an observer. and often, they were communicated through her personal experiences. She describes the ordinary and routine, but also the extraordinary.

The content is excellent, but the presentation puts it over the top. Ms. Haid is a talented writer. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Her descriptions are animated, and they flow seamlessly. I could feel her enthusiasm and sometimes frustration. I often felt as though I was listening to a friend “shooting-the-breeze” about her adventure in Calabria. (I had to sip a vino, or two, when I was reading.)

Her content and style would have been more than enough to make me a happy customer, but Ms.Haid provided more by sprinkling humor throughout. I chuckled often and laughed out loud a few times.

A final point is that this book is a great resource for planning a trip to Calabria. The information about sites and experiences were invaluable for my trip. I was in Calabria for three weeks, and I visited at least 10 great spots/experiences that I would have missed were it not for this book. (Please note that there were far more than ten in the book. I am referring to ten that I would have missed, because they did not surface in my guide books or YouTube.)
