I am the type of reader that finds an author I like, and then I order everything I can get my hands on that the author has written. My thinking is that if I like the writing style of the author in one book, I am likely to enjoy it in another.

USUALLY this turns out to be true. (Orson Scott Card, Robert Sawyer, Richard K. Morgan, David Brin, etc...) but sometimes a book pops up in an author's bibliography that just doesn't excite me.

Time City is definitely one of those books for me with Diana Wynne Jones.

I LIKE time travel stories and I liked the characters in the story. But one thing you have to watch for with time travel is creating scenarios where no matter what you do there are no consequences since you can go back and try again. Paradoxes are introduced in most time travel stories as a way of putting up boundaries, but in this book there just seemed to be no real lines in what you could and couldn't do - except one malfunctioning time travel egg, which still eventually got the job done.

It isn't a terrible book, but I expected so much more after reading her Chrestomanchi Chronicles. This was just not in the same league.

A Tale of Time City Diana Wynne Jones 9780064473514 Books Reviews

Diana Wynne Jones always weaves a magical tale. Her characters are distinctive and memorable, and her stories pull you in and don't let go. I always wish the book would go on...
Loved the book. My daughter is reading it now, and she also loves it. Diana Wynne Jones is simply a marvelous storyteller. Regarding the seller the book arrived promptly and in exactly the condition specified. Excellent!
I love DWJ, and have since I was a child. It's only now that I'm getting into her more obscure works. (And by obscure, I mean the ones you normally don't find in most chain bookstores.) This one was good (I'm a sucker for time travel), but the ending was rushed.
A Tale of Time City by Diana Wynne Jones is an exciting book about time travelling and the impacts one action or choice can have on others (or in this case the whole of history!)

I liked this book because it had interesting characters and the plot line was quite good. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was that some of the events happened so fast you had to go back and re-read a few pages

Overall, A Tale of Time City is an amazing book well worth your time!
This is a wonderful kid's book that I still occasionally enjoy as an adult. The story is interesting with lots of action and interesting tidbits on day to day living that make it a nice page turner.
A wonderful story about time, and how it changes. I won't give away the plot line but it is a worthy story.
She handles time travel very authentically. Creates good tension in the plot.
i read this novel to my ten-year-old, and it was a huge leap, intellectually, for her to understand the time travel aspects, especially the bits about changing history when you visit it. the characters - especially the heroine - really drew her in, however, and she loved it so much, we could hardly put it down. diana wynne jones never disappoints, and while this is not our favorite of her novels, it's in the top three. anchoring the story in children being evacuated from london during world war two - quoting, in effect, c.s. lewis' "the lion, the witch and the wardrobe" - is a stroke of genius, both because it creates a historical framework (so much time travel takes place from the present day, which makes it harder to conceptualize 'time'), and because the familiarity of a known beginning can be so comforting. all the better when the novel hares off in a completely different direction!
